Inside The CIA’s Secret War In Jamaica tells the story of the campaign from the United States to destabilize the Michael Manley government in 1976 due to his ties to Fidel Castro. The book covers the rise of violence between the PNP (People’s National Party) and the JLP (Jamaica Labor Party), the assassination attempt of Bob Marley, and the rise of the Jamaica Shower Posse and its ties to the CIA. Gane-McCalla also takes an in-depth look into the events leading up to 1976 for both the CIA and the country of Jamaica including Jamaica’s history of pirates and slave rebellions, and its road to independence. To understand the nature and history of the CIA, the book gets to the bottom of the John F. Kennedy assassination, Watergate, CIA heroin smuggling in Laos during the Vietnam War, and cocaine trafficking during Iran-Contra, which involved the same players who were involved in destabilizing Jamaica.

Inside the CIA Secret War in Jamaica Casey GaneMcCalla Books

I was shocked when I came across this book and realized it wasn't published by a major publishing house. The issue of CIA involvement in Jamaica isn't necessarily a well worn topic but it also isn't new. The fact that the wikileak drop contained so many documents on it was bound to redraw the history to some extent. Unfortunately, it seems like Gane-McCalla was too worried about being scooped to put out a real piece of investigative journalism. Not only is the book painfully repetitive, it is terrible at providing documentary evidence of its assertions. For example, the author writes, "Embassy cables also show that Manley held back on bringing up his proof of CIA destabilization in Jamaica in the hopes of maintaining a good relationship with the United States." Yet there is no citation much less quotation on this topic. Furthermore, in his rush to publish, Gane-McCalla painfully misrepresents many of the cables he cites from the wikileaks drop. I can't wait for a professional with the aid of a legit publisher to take on these new finding. Chapters of this book wouldn't have passed muster in my undergraduate introduction to international relations course.

Inside the CIA Secret War in Jamaica Casey GaneMcCalla Books Reviews

Comprehensive overview of a lot of the Cold War activity to which Jamaica and several other countries suffered collateral damage. I was vaguely aware of the mix of violence and politics in Jamaica over the years, but Casey's detail was illuminating. Enjoyed it.
Was extremely informative and very well written. A lot of the material is stuff that I had heard of or read separately and it is great to have such an organized and chronological source to site when referring to CIA entanglements in South America. Overall I loved the book and it was very easy to read and understand! Great job!
great, still waiting on my cd with Ritchie Stephens
Ive been interested in the CIA's hand around the world for quite a while, having seen the book and just skimming over the contents, i was immediately interested... The book covers not only the CIA in Jamaica, but also connects the dots to other goings on during the time period... Extremely informative and very well written, the author obviously has a passion for the subject and bringing truth to the reader. I enjoyed the read immensely and would highly recommend it to anyone with even a slight interest in geo-politics/history/CIA and the history of the US gov.'s actions around the world. Great job!
I enjoyed reading this book. Gave me a lot of insight of the sociopolitical climate in Jamaica during the 70s.
Concise and cuttingly riveting.
If you have never read one CIA book before in your life then this will be a pretty good one. If you have read many CIA books already then very little in this book will be new. The author discusses a lot of non-Jamaica related CIA history, and doesn't seem to offer too much new insights that well read CIA buffs won't already know. My biggest critique is the author seems to give Democrats a break and really likes to hammer on what he terms "right wing" people. Despite the fact that the Clintons have been implicated in the Mena, Arkansas drug running... the author only briefly mentions Bill Clinton and it's a quote were he is blaming Bush, essentially. The author also gives LBJ a pass and doesn't really hammer the fact that he was a Democrat as well. All in all the book was ok, but I was disappointed in the authors reluctance to abandon partisan politics and acknowledge that leviathan embodies both parties.
